Coromandel Peninsula – day trip from Auckland visiting
Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach.
Take a spectacular day trip from Auckland trip around both sides of the Coromandel Peninsula. Knock of Coromandel Township, Whitianga, Cathedral Caves, Hot Water Beach and a few other spectacular spots along the way and you have the brand new Coro Coaster day trip from Auckland.
Start your day on the Coromandel with a “cup of tea” in Kopu just down the road from Thames. The Historic Kopu Bridge was built in 1928 is the longest single lane bridge in NZ and also the last remaining operational swing bridge in NZ.
The centre span of the bridge where the Pilot house is located, swings open to allow boats through. In it’s heyday the river was a highway for paddle steamers, goods and sand barges. The bridge was closed in 2011 when the new two lane bridge opened and a Trust intends to restore and open the bridge again as a historic pedestrian and cycleway.
With early beginnings as a wild colonial gold rush settlement, Coromandel Town is known for its charming mix of Victorian architecture, beaches and forests. At Coromandel Township you will have enough time to explore the city or as an option you can experience the Driving Creek Railway ($35 Adult, Children half price).
Cross to the others side of the peninsula and we visit the town of Whitianga.
Whitianga has been continuously occupied for more than a thousand years since Maori explorer Kupe’s tribe settled here after his visit in about 950 AD. Te Whitianga o Kupe is the original place name of the town, meaning Kupe’s crossing place. In Whitianga we have a stop around lunch time so you can refill your tanks and relax Coromandel style.
A short drive takes us to Hahei where you jump aboard with Hahei Explorer to visit Cathedral Cove.
Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) Marine Reserve is on the Coromandel Peninsula, covering an area of 840 hectares. Cathedral Cove is named after the cave located there, linking Mare’s Leg Cove to Cathedral Cove.
The Hahei Explorer is the original Cathedral Cove boat tour to Hahei’s marine reserve, stunning volcanic coastline and magnificent sea caves. This hour long takes the visitor into coastal islands of the marine reserve, reefs, massive sea caves and bays, including the world famous Cathedral Cove.
We will adjust the itinerary to ensure we hit Hot Water Beach at the correct tide. Dig a hole and bathe in a spa pool, Kiwi style.
